Dive Insight:
Whataburger framed the new menu as a way to offer consumers consistent value.
“We know our Guests are looking for more ways to enjoy the Whataburger favorites they love at a price that fits their everyday lives,” said Jessica Reicher, the chain’s chief operating officer. “More for $4 gives them exactly that: more choice, more big flavor, and the made-to-order quality they expect from us, all for only $4.”
A more compelling value positioning could help Whataburger win consumers in new markets outside of its Texas heartland, and sustain strong sales in established trade areas.
The chain has directed much of its strategy toward expansion in recent years. The brand recently unveiled two new prototype store designs meant to help differentiate the chain’s visual identity from other QSRs. In July, the chain hired a new CFO, Ryan Moore, to help oversee its financial operations as it continues its national growth. The chain has also partnered with convenience retail operators to open locations alongside c-stores and gas stations.
Whataburger’s $4 value menu could insulate it from value plays at competitors and win new dining occasions.
The latest round of value wars kicked off in June 2024, when Burger King and McDonald’s launched dueling $5 meal deals, followed shortly by a slew of price-point deals, value boxes and combos at other chains. The consumer price sensitivity that motivated those meal deal launches has continued alongside sustained inflation. McDonald’s rolled out a new $3 or Less value platform in March, and Subway added a $5 meal offering in April.
