Dive Brief:
- McDonald’s appointed Skye Anderson as president of McDonald’s USA, effective Tuesday, the company said in a press release.
- Anderson succeeds Joe Erlinger, who is leaving the company after a 20-year tenure, including nearly seven years overseeing the U.S. business. Erlinger will work with Anderson to ensure a seamless transition and serve as an advisor until early next year.
- Anderson has worked at McDonald’s for over 26 years, and she was appointed chief operating officer of McDonald’s USA in April as part of a “deliberate leadership transition plan” to ensure continuity and prepare her to lead the chain’s largest market, according to the press release.
Dive Insight:
In her new position, Anderson will oversee the U.S. portion of McDonald’s > NEXT strategy, which the chain unveiled in June.
The strategy is focused on improving the restaurant experience, through new designs, menu innovation, back-of-house improvements and technology deployments.
Anderson has worked across many different parts of McDonald’s, including finance leadership in Australia, field and zone leadership in the U.S. and the creation of the chain’s Global Business Services, per the press release.
She has also helped “drive results while leading through periods of transformation and growth,” the company said. During the four years she oversaw the U.S. West Zone, Anderson supported initiatives to modernize over 5,700 restaurants, drove comparable sales growth of over 30% and increased restaurant unit cash flow by $100,000, per the press release.
Anderson’s expertise could also help McDonald’s rectify a dip in traffic in the U.S. during Q2 that followed several large menu deployments, which increased ticket times and decreased consumer satisfaction.
“[Anderson] combines deep operational discipline with strong financial judgment and has earned the trust of Owner/Operators, suppliers and employees,” Chris Kempczinski, McDonald’s chairman and CEO, said in a statement.
Over the past seven years, Erlinger oversaw major changes in the chain’s domestic market. These shifts included a move toward a nationwide value offering, menu innovation like the return of the Snack Wrap, and a quick recovery following an E. coli outbreak in 2024, which impacted Quarter Pounders and sickened over 100 guests.
“[Erlinger] has made a tremendous impact on McDonald's throughout his more than 20-year career,” said Kempczinski. “As President of McDonald's USA, he helped guide the business through a period of significant change while strengthening our digital capabilities, franchise system and operational foundation.”
The transition in leadership comes a few weeks after the chain hired Ugwechi Amadi as chief strategy officer to support its NEXT strategy. Amadi succeeded Emily Reasor, who became managing director for New Zealand.
